What is a NetID account?
Every student and employee has a single NetID (Active Directory) account at Downstate. Your NetID account authenticates your login across a wide range of Downstate systems including Downstate Windows PCs, email, Banner, Medicat, learning management systems (Brightspace, Leo, Healthstream) etc.
When do I receive my NetID information?
Students receive an automatic mailing when they are admitted to Downstate that contains their NetID info.
Employees receive their NetID info from their direct supervisor once they complete onboarding/orientation.
What's my user name?
Different systems require the use of different user names. Some use your Downstate email address. Others use your NetID username:
NetID User Name for Students: Your nine-digit Downstate student ID number, e.g., 202412345
NetID User Name for Employees: Your first initial followed by your last name, up to a total of eight characters, e.g., jsmith
What if I'm both an employee and a student?
If you are an employee who is also starting a degree program, no worries — use your existing NetID account to authenticate into academic systems.
Your NetID account is able to check 'behind the scenes' for each of these systems no matter which username you use.
How do I change my NetID Password? How often do I have to change it?
Your NetID password expires every 180 days and must be changed. Several notification emails from security@downstate.edu will be sent to you in the two weeks leading up to the expiration. Self-service password reset is available for current students and employees but you must set it up through your email account. To do that, once you are issued an email account, use a web browser to log into your Downstate email account the first time. For this task, you cannot use a phone email app or desktop software. Once you log in, you will be required to add key information to your account (your cell phone number, etc). That information is required for 2-step authentication as well as self-service password reset.
Are you an admitted student who needs to reset your password? You will need to request assistance to reset your NetID password. (You don't get an email account while you are "Admitted" status. Accounts are generated once you are designated as "Accepted" — after you pay a deposit to accept a spot.)
