Body
At SUNY Downstate, we understand the importance of recognizing and respecting individuals’ preferred names. Our name change policy aims to accommodate personal preferences while maintaining clarity and consistency. Below are the key points of our policy:
1. Preferred Names
- Yes to Using Preferred Names: We encourage users to provide their preferred names, which we will use in most instances. For example, if a user’s legal name is “Xiaxio,” but they prefer to be addressed as “Sally,” we will honor that preference.
- No to Slang Versions: While we embrace preferred names, we do not accept slang versions. For instance, if a user’s legal name is “Andrew,” we will not use informal versions like “Andy.”
2. Legal Name Changes
- Marital Status Changes: If a user experiences a legal name change due to marriage or any other reason, they must follow the appropriate legal process. This involves completing a Document Request Form and submitting the necessary documentation. Students must present an original proof of change (e.g., court order, marriage license) to the Office of the Registrar. Name changes are not granted after graduation or separation from SUNY Downstate.
Conclusion
Our name change policy strikes a balance between personal preferences and maintaining clarity within our systems. We appreciate our users’ cooperation in adhering to these guidelines.
