Making Panopto Sessions Accessible

Accessible Panopto recordings are easier for all students to use and help support ADA and WCAG requirements.

Use Captions

  • Panopto automatically generates captions for recorded sessions.
  • Captions should always be reviewed for accuracy, especially for technical terms, names and abbreviations.

Speak Clearly

  • Use a good microphone when possible, speak at a moderate pace, and avoid talking over other speakers.
  • If students ask questions in the room, repeat the questions before answering.

Describe Visual Content

  • Do not rely only on what appears on screen.
  • Read important slide text aloud and briefly describe charts, graphs, images, or demonstrations.
  • Panopto also supports keyboard navigation, screen readers, and adjustable playback speeds for viewers who use assistive technology

Use Accessible Slides

  • Slides should use large fonts, good color contrast, and simple layouts.
  • Important images should include alt text in PowerPoint when possible.

Review Before Publishing

Before publishing a session, make sure:

  • Captions are accurate
  • Audio is clear
  • Slides are readable
  • Important visuals are described
