Error when accessing Banner Self-Service using the Microsoft Authenticator app

Occasionally some users, when attempting to access Banner Self-Service using the Microsoft Authenticator app, encounter an error message like this:

Message: AADSTS75011: Authentication method 'MultiFactor, PasswordlessPhoneSignIn' by which the user authenticated with the service doesn't match requested authentication method 'Password, ProtectedTransport'. Contact the DMC_Ethos_Identity application owner.

This sometimes occurs when using Microsoft Authenticator with passwordless sign-in requests.

The fix is as follows:

  • Launch the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.
  • Open the authenticator account for your Downstate email address.
  • Click on the Settings icon to the top-right.
  • Select Disable passwordless sign-in requests.
  • This should allow you to login to Banner Self-Service using a one-time password code instead.

After you gain access to Banner Self-Service using this method, you should be able to reenable passwordless sign-in requests.
